Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling
  • 1 lb ground beef Use 80/20 for optimal flavor and moisture.
  • 1 medium onion Finely diced.
  • 1 medium green bell pepper Finely diced.
  • 2 cloves garlic Minced.
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar Packed.
  • 1 teaspoon mustard Yellow or Dijon.
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt Adjust to taste.
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper Freshly ground.
For the Texas Toast
  • 8 slices Texas toast Thick-cut bread.
  • ½ cup butter Softened, for spreading.
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder Optional, for added flavor.

Method

Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for another 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
  5. Simmer the mixture for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Adjust seasoning to taste.
Prepare the Texas Toast
  1. While the sloppy joe filling simmers, preheat your toaster or oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast. If desired, sprinkle garlic powder over the butter for extra flavor.
  3. Place the slices butter-side up on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Assemble the Sloppy Joes
  1. Once the Texas toast is ready, remove it from the oven.
  2. Spoon a generous portion of the sloppy joe filling onto the unbuttered side of half of the Texas toast slices.
  3. Top with the remaining slices of Texas toast, buttered side up, to create a sandwich.
  4. Serve immediately with your favorite sides, such as potato chips or a simple salad.
