Ingredients

For the Mozzarella Sticks
  • 12 oz Mozzarella cheese sticks Cut into 3-inch pieces
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour For dredging
  • 2 large Eggs Beaten
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs Panko recommended for extra crunch
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic powder For flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Onion powder For flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Dried oregano For flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Red pepper flakes Adjust to taste for spiciness
  • 1 teaspoon Salt To taste
  • 1 qt Vegetable oil For frying
For the Marinara Sauce
  • 1 cup Marinara sauce Store-bought or homemade
  • 1 teaspoon Dried basil Optional, for added flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Red pepper flakes Optional, for added heat

Method

Prepare the Ingredients
  1. Cut the mozzarella cheese sticks into 3-inch pieces. This size is ideal for dipping and ensures they melt properly when fried.
  2. Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, red pepper flakes, and salt.
Bread the Mozzarella Sticks
  1. Dredge each mozzarella stick in flour, ensuring it is fully coated. This helps the egg adhere better.
  2. Dip the floured stick into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off.
  3. Finally, roll the stick in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure the breadcrumbs stick well. Repeat for all cheese sticks.
Fry the Mozzarella Sticks
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a heavy pot to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to check the temperature, as this is crucial for achieving a crispy exterior.
  2. Carefully place a few mozzarella sticks in the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown.
  3. Use tongs to remove the sticks from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain excess oil.
Prepare the Marinara Sauce
  1. In a small saucepan, heat the marinara sauce over medium heat. Stir in dried basil and red pepper flakes if using. Allow to simmer for 5 minutes to enhance the flavors.
Serve
  1. Serve the mozzarella sticks hot with the marinara sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy your delicious, crispy appetizer!

Notes

For extra crunch, you can double-dip the mozzarella sticks by repeating the egg and breadcrumb steps. Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature to avoid soggy sticks.
